### On the Castes
The upper crust of Fustat is comprised of nobles and priests, the older and more connected with the history of the Ptolemic Empire, the more prestigious. New dynasties or churches of young gods are typically considered lower in status. Certain organizatio ns that are neither based on peerage also belong to the high castes, the Order of Barred Doors is one such group. The middling free classes of Fustat are those who make things; art is considered a higher calling than practical crafts. The lowest free classes are unskilled laborer s, people who do tasks that neither produce finished goods or require lengthy amounts of time engaged in book learning. Slaves can be considered a part of literally any of classes, based totally on who owns them. In fact, a slave that is owned by a prestigious noble family is con sidered to be in higher social standing than a free labourer. Such slaves are often experts in a field learning and considered an extension of the person or organization that owns them. Academic or service experts are rarely free people, and those that are are typically considere d to be bad at what they do, since no one has offered them a position. Though slaves, they are guaranteed several rights by law. At the absolute bottom of society are "chattel", such people are always in this tier as a result of being found guilty of a serious crime and are sent to work til death either as galley slaves or as miners.
